Charlie Drew's Formula

This is a raw formulation, held together with galatin and then frozen.


Myron Gordon's formula

This is a cooked paste food made from liver, spinach and oatmeal made by Myron S. Gordon to feed live bearing fishes used for genetic research.

  • 1 pound beef or calf liver
  • 1 pound spinach
  • Oat flakes
  1. Trim and de-vein liver.
  2. Process oat flakes in blender, dry.
  3. Process spinach, reserve.
  4. Process in blender adding only enough water to process, strain.
  5. Add spinach and liver to oat flour. (Gordon used baby cereal and wheat germ, oats are more traditional)
  6. Place into small jars, pasteurize for 30 minutes.
  7. Cool and store in fridge.

Jack Wattley's formula

Frozen raw Beef heart, salmon and krill used by US discus breeder Jack Wattley. Modified by the author to increase mineral and selenium levels.

  • 1 beef heart 2.5 pounds+, with fat
  • 2 pounds Of fresh Salmon
  • 10 ounces of Spinach
  • 8 cloves of Garlic
  • 6 ounces of Krill Meal
  • 6 Multi-vitamin pills
  • 6 Multi-mineral pills
  • 6 200 mcg selenium pills (Selenomethione or Selenocysteine, not Sodium Selenite)

1) Soak vitamin and mineral pills in enough water to cover them or grind in a mortar.
2) De-fat the heart, grind in a grinder.
3) Grind the salmon.
4) Transfer to food processor, add krill, mix until a firm paste.
5) Put into freezer bags, flat.
6) Break a piece off when frozen and put it in the tank.
7) Does not keep in the fridge, use frozen.
